How I Created a Great Garden and a Dream Home

3 Things to Do Before Moving Into Your New Home

Moving into a new home can be messy and a lot of hard-work. It is a refreshing but challenging venture. However, with a good to-do list, you will enjoy making the move. Other than getting to know your neighbours and thoroughly inspecting your new house, here are some few things you need to keep at the top of your list.

Pest-proof your new house

Pests have always been a nuisance as no one wants to share their home with uninvited guests let alone disease-causing ones. Therefore, ensure you pest-proof your new house.

First, inspect thoroughly for any signs of surviving pests. Spray the house a few days before moving to avoid the health risks that come with fumigating. Clean every cabinet and dark or high places in the kitchen, and don't forget your wardrobes since these are the best hiding spots for cockroaches. To ensure you'll be on the safe side even after moving in, seal every entry point. Remember insects and rodents will use every tiny opening to get into your new cosy home. Therefore pay particular attention to your doors, windows and places where pipes and wires have been installed. Seal your door and windows using wire mesh and stuffing steel wool into holes.

Take advantage of the new empty house

Take care of most tasks while the house is still empty. A new house is an opportunity for you to create the style and home feel you want, and what better time to do this than with no obstacles such as furniture. This is the best time to do painting or wallpapering. Do all the wiring and renovations including refinishing hardwood floors. Trying to change the popcorn ceiling while already settled will only make your work harder; some things are best done without distractions. Additionally thoroughly clean the house, and steam your carpets before moving in.

Check all mechanical equipment

Before moving into a new home, do not forget to check whether the house systems and machines are functioning. Have all machinery cleaned, dusted and repaired where need be. Test the alarm system, showers, heaters, air conditioning and sockets to ensure they are properly functioning. Contact a professional plumber to inspect the drainage system, and check for any leaking faucets and taps. Remember to locate the main water valve and the circuit breaker box since you might urgently need to turn off the power or water supply in the case of an emergency.
